The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the global hospitality industry, disrupting operations, reducing revenue, and altering consumer behavior. Hotel businesses, particularly in developing regions like Kano State, Nigeria, have been significantly affected due to lockdowns, travel restrictions, and declining tourism (UNWTO, 2023). As a major commercial hub in northern Nigeria, Kano relies on its hospitality sector to accommodate business travelers and tourists. However, during the pandemic, hotels experienced unprecedented challenges, including reduced occupancy rates, workforce reductions, and increased operational costs to meet health and safety protocols. Although the Nigerian government implemented measures to mitigate the pandemic's economic effects, hotel businesses in Kano continue to grapple with the aftermath, including shifting consumer preferences and financial instability.

Statement of the Problem
COVID-19 has exposed vulnerabilities in the hospitality sector, particularly in Kano State, where hotels rely heavily on business travelers and local events. The pandemic disrupted operations and revealed gaps in crisis preparedness and financial resilience among hotel businesses (NBS, 2024). Despite government interventions, many hotels struggle to recover fully, with some permanently shutting down. While existing studies have focused on the general impact of COVID-19 on Nigeria's economy, there is limited research on its specific effects on hotel sustainability in Kano. This lack of data hinders the development of tailored strategies to address the challenges faced by hotels in the region.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the economic impact of COVID-19 on hotel businesses in Kano State.

  2. To evaluate the strategies employed by hotels in Kano to sustain operations during and after the pandemic.

  3. To identify long-term measures to enhance the resilience of Kano’s hotel businesses against future disruptions.

Research Questions

  1. What is the economic impact of COVID-19 on hotel businesses in Kano State?

  2. What strategies were employed by hotels in Kano to sustain operations during and after the pandemic?

  3. What long-term measures can enhance the resilience of Kano’s hotel businesses against future disruptions?

Research Hypotheses

  1. COVID-19 has no significant economic impact on hotel businesses in Kano State.

  2. Strategies employed by hotels in Kano do not significantly affect their ability to sustain operations.

  3. There are no significant long-term measures to enhance hotel business resilience in Kano State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on hotel businesses in Kano State, examining the impact of COVID-19 on their operations, strategies, and resilience. It excludes other segments of the hospitality industry, such as restaurants and event centers. Challenges include obtaining accurate data from hotels due to confidentiality concerns and varying degrees of willingness to participate.
