Background of the Study
There is a growing body of literature examining the disparity in healthcare service quality between urban and rural hospitals in Nigeria. Urban hospitals are typically better equipped, have more trained personnel, and can offer more specialized services. In contrast, rural hospitals are often faced with resource constraints, understaffing, and difficulties in attracting qualified healthcare professionals. Despite the advances in urban healthcare systems, the gap in service quality between urban and rural areas continues to be a significant challenge, with rural populations often receiving substandard healthcare. In Kwara State, a diverse region with both urban and rural settings, healthcare disparities in terms of service quality remain a concern.

This study will evaluate the differences in healthcare service quality between urban and rural hospitals in Kwara State, exploring factors such as infrastructure, patient care, staff qualifications, and access to medical equipment. The research aims to understand the impact of these disparities on patient outcomes and to provide recommendations for reducing the gap in healthcare service quality.

Statement of the Problem
While the healthcare sector in Nigeria has experienced some growth, significant disparities in the quality of services between urban and rural hospitals persist. Rural hospitals in Kwara State often face challenges such as poor infrastructure, low-quality services, and a lack of medical professionals, whereas urban hospitals benefit from better resources and a wider range of services. These disparities contribute to poorer health outcomes in rural areas and undermine the overall quality of healthcare in the state. This study seeks to investigate these disparities in healthcare service quality and propose strategies to bridge the gap.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To compare the healthcare service quality in urban and rural hospitals in Kwara State.

  2. To identify the factors contributing to the differences in service quality between urban and rural hospitals.

  3. To provide recommendations for improving healthcare service quality in rural hospitals in Kwara State.

Research Questions

  1. What are the differences in healthcare service quality between urban and rural hospitals in Kwara State?

  2. What factors contribute to the differences in service quality between these hospitals?

  3. How can healthcare service quality be improved in rural hospitals in Kwara State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Healthcare service quality in urban hospitals in Kwara State is significantly higher than in rural hospitals.

  2. Factors such as resource allocation, staff training, and infrastructure contribute to the disparities in healthcare service quality between urban and rural hospitals.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on hospitals in both urban and rural areas within Kwara State. The study will assess service quality based on infrastructure, patient care, and staff performance. Limitations may include challenges in accessing hospitals for data collection and the subjective nature of measuring service quality, which may differ based on patient perception and available resources.

Definitions of Terms

  • Healthcare Service Quality: The degree to which healthcare services meet the expectations of patients and comply with established standards of care.

  • Urban Hospitals: Hospitals located in urban areas with better access to resources, healthcare personnel, and medical technologies.

  • Rural Hospitals: Hospitals located in rural areas, typically with fewer resources, infrastructure, and healthcare professionals.
