Background of the Study

Gender inclusion in governance has gained increasing attention in recent years, particularly in corporate settings, where diverse perspectives at the decision-making level can lead to more innovative solutions and better organizational performance. In Nigeria, the financial sector, particularly commercial banks, has seen gradual improvements in the inclusion of women in senior management roles and on corporate boards. United Bank for Africa (UBA), one of Nigeria's largest and most successful banks, has made strides in implementing gender inclusion policies to promote the representation of women in its leadership (Akinyemi & Olaniyan, 2023).

However, the full integration of gender inclusion policies in governance structures remains a challenge for many Nigerian banks, with deep-rooted cultural and systemic barriers preventing equal opportunities for women. This study will evaluate UBA’s gender inclusion policies and assess their effectiveness in improving the representation of women in the bank's board governance, particularly in Sokoto State, where cultural factors may have a stronger influence on gender roles and opportunities (Adebayo, 2023).

Statement of the Problem

Although UBA has made efforts to promote gender inclusion at the governance level, there is limited empirical research on the actual impact and effectiveness of these policies, particularly in regions with more conservative cultural norms, such as Sokoto State. Gender disparities in leadership positions continue to exist in many Nigerian organizations, and understanding the barriers and challenges to achieving gender inclusion is crucial for creating more equitable workplaces. This study seeks to evaluate the success of gender inclusion policies at UBA, particularly in terms of their impact on board governance in Sokoto State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of gender inclusion policies in the governance structure of UBA in Sokoto State.
  2. To assess the barriers to achieving gender inclusion in the leadership of UBA in Sokoto State.
  3. To provide recommendations for improving gender inclusion policies in the governance structures of Nigerian banks.

Research Questions

  1. How effective are gender inclusion policies in promoting female representation on the board of UBA in Sokoto State?
  2. What are the key barriers to achieving gender inclusion in the governance structure of UBA in Sokoto State?
  3. How can UBA improve its gender inclusion policies to enhance female representation in board governance?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Gender inclusion policies at UBA significantly improve the representation of women in board governance in Sokoto State.
  2. Cultural barriers and biases impede the full implementation of gender inclusion policies in UBA's governance structures in Sokoto State.
  3. Strengthening gender inclusion policies at UBA leads to improved organizational performance and better decision-making.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the gender inclusion policies at UBA in Sokoto State. The research will examine the bank’s board governance and leadership practices but will not explore gender inclusion in other sectors or regions. Limitations include challenges in accessing internal organizational data and the influence of cultural factors on the implementation of policies.

Definitions of Terms

  • Gender Inclusion: The practice of ensuring equal opportunities for all genders in leadership roles, decision-making, and organizational structures.
  • Board Governance: The processes and structures through which the board of directors oversees the management and strategic direction of an organization.
  • Sokoto State: A state in Nigeria where cultural and religious practices may influence gender roles in the workplace.
