Background of the study
Employee training is a critical component in the development of a workforce that can contribute effectively to the growth of a retail business (Ajayi & Adeyemi, 2024). In the retail industry, particularly supermarkets, employees are often the primary point of contact between the business and the customer. Well-trained employees can enhance the shopping experience by providing better customer service, product knowledge, and promoting sales (Olufemi & Ibrahim, 2025). In Plateau State, supermarkets are key players in the retail sector, and their success is often dependent on the quality of service and the skill set of their employees.

Training programs that focus on product knowledge, customer engagement, and sales techniques have been shown to directly influence sales performance (Adeleke et al., 2024). However, despite the growing recognition of employee training’s importance, the direct link between training initiatives and retail sales growth remains underexplored in the context of Plateau State supermarkets. This study seeks to investigate how employee training affects sales growth and overall business performance in supermarkets in Plateau State.

Statement of the problem
Supermarkets in Plateau State continue to experience challenges in achieving consistent sales growth and customer satisfaction. One possible factor is the inadequacy of employee training programs, which may not align with the strategic needs of these businesses. While some supermarkets invest in training programs, the impact of these initiatives on retail sales growth and overall performance remains unclear. This study seeks to determine the relationship between employee training and sales growth in supermarkets within Plateau State.

Objectives of the study

  1. To assess the impact of employee training on retail sales performance in supermarkets in Plateau State.

  2. To examine the relationship between customer service quality and employee training in supermarkets in Plateau State.

  3. To identify the key components of employee training that contribute most to sales growth in Plateau State supermarkets.

Research questions

  1. How does employee training impact retail sales growth in supermarkets in Plateau State?

  2. What is the relationship between customer service quality and employee training in supermarkets in Plateau State?

  3. What specific training components most effectively contribute to sales growth in supermarkets in Plateau State?

Research hypotheses

  1. Employee training significantly enhances retail sales growth in supermarkets in Plateau State.

  2. There is a positive relationship between the quality of customer service and the extent of employee training in supermarkets in Plateau State.

  3. Specific training components, such as product knowledge and sales techniques, contribute significantly to retail sales growth in Plateau State supermarkets.

Scope and limitations of the study
The study will focus on supermarkets in Plateau State and their employee training programs. It will not include other retail sectors such as small businesses or online platforms. Limitations may include challenges in obtaining accurate data from private businesses and potential biases in employee self-reported training experiences.
