Background of the Study

Employee retention is a critical challenge for retail businesses, particularly in a competitive market like that of supermarkets, where employee turnover can significantly affect service quality, operational efficiency, and customer satisfaction (Ademola, 2023). In Nigeria, where retail businesses often struggle with high turnover rates, especially in regions like Kwara State, the need for effective employee retention strategies is more urgent than ever. These strategies can include competitive compensation, training and development programs, recognition schemes, career advancement opportunities, and fostering a positive workplace culture.

Supermarkets, being high-traffic businesses with varying employee roles, face additional challenges in maintaining employee satisfaction and commitment. Poor retention strategies may lead to increased recruitment and training costs, loss of experienced staff, and lower overall performance. Conversely, effective retention strategies can reduce these costs, improve employee morale, and increase organizational commitment (Ajibola, 2023). However, despite the growing importance of employee retention in retail, there is limited research examining the specific strategies employed by supermarkets in Kwara State to retain employees. This study seeks to assess the effectiveness of various employee retention strategies within these businesses.

Statement of the Problem

Employee turnover in supermarkets in Kwara State is a growing concern, with businesses often struggling to retain skilled and experienced staff. The cost of replacing employees is high, both in terms of recruitment and training new hires. Furthermore, high turnover can lead to decreased service quality, impacting customer satisfaction and sales performance. However, despite the critical importance of employee retention, there is limited empirical data on the retention strategies employed by supermarkets in Kwara State, and how effective these strategies are in reducing turnover and improving employee engagement. This study aims to fill this gap by assessing the employee retention strategies used by supermarkets in the state.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the employee retention strategies employed by supermarkets in Kwara State.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of these strategies in reducing employee turnover and increasing employee satisfaction.
  3. To explore the relationship between employee retention and organizational performance in supermarkets in Kwara State.

Research Questions

  1. What employee retention strategies are employed by supermarkets in Kwara State?
  2. How effective are these strategies in reducing employee turnover and increasing employee satisfaction?
  3. What impact does employee retention have on the overall performance of supermarkets in Kwara State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is a significant relationship between employee retention strategies and employee turnover rates in supermarkets in Kwara State.
  2. Employee retention strategies significantly influence employee job satisfaction in supermarkets in Kwara State.
  3. Effective employee retention strategies positively impact the overall performance of supermarkets in Kwara State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on supermarkets in Kwara State and examine the employee retention strategies they use. It will not include other retail businesses or regions. Limitations of the study include potential biases in employee responses and the challenge of assessing long-term effects of retention strategies.
