Background of the study
Quality assurance (QA) in healthcare is an essential practice that ensures healthcare services meet specific standards and result in safe, effective, and patient-centered care. In Nigerian hospitals, particularly tertiary hospitals, the introduction of quality assurance frameworks is critical to improving patient care, reducing medical errors, and enhancing overall healthcare outcomes (Alabi & Alhassan, 2023). These frameworks typically include internal audits, accreditation processes, patient safety measures, and continuous training for healthcare staff.
In Kano State, tertiary hospitals have been at the forefront of implementing quality assurance systems, although challenges such as inadequate resources, insufficient training, and lack of commitment from healthcare staff hinder the full effectiveness of these frameworks (Ogunseitan et al., 2024). Some of the common QA initiatives in these hospitals include setting clear standards for clinical procedures, ensuring compliance with safety protocols, and evaluating healthcare performance through patient feedback and clinical audits. However, there is limited research assessing the impact of these quality assurance frameworks on the actual improvement of service delivery in hospitals in Kano State.
This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of quality assurance frameworks in tertiary hospitals in Kano State and examine the factors that affect their implementation.
Statement of the problem
Tertiary hospitals in Kano State have implemented various quality assurance frameworks to improve healthcare services, but the actual impact on service delivery and patient outcomes remains unclear. Despite the existence of such frameworks, issues such as insufficient resources, inadequate staff training, and poor implementation of QA policies persist. There is a need for a thorough assessment of these frameworks to determine whether they effectively improve healthcare quality in these hospitals and what challenges hinder their success (Adebayo et al., 2023).
Objectives of the study
To assess the effectiveness of quality assurance frameworks in tertiary hospitals in Kano State.
To identify the challenges faced by hospitals in Kano State in implementing quality assurance frameworks.
To propose strategies to improve the implementation and effectiveness of quality assurance frameworks in tertiary hospitals in Kano State.
Research questions
How effective are the quality assurance frameworks in improving healthcare services in tertiary hospitals in Kano State?
What challenges do tertiary hospitals in Kano State face in implementing quality assurance frameworks?
What strategies can be adopted to improve the quality assurance frameworks in tertiary hospitals in Kano State?
Research hypotheses
Quality assurance frameworks significantly improve healthcare services in tertiary hospitals in Kano State.
Lack of resources and staff training are significant barriers to the effective implementation of quality assurance frameworks in Kano State’s tertiary hospitals.
Enhancing training programs and allocating sufficient resources will improve the effectiveness of quality assurance frameworks in tertiary hospitals in Kano State.
Scope and limitations of the study
This study will focus on tertiary hospitals in Kano State and assess the effectiveness of quality assurance frameworks in these institutions. The research will be limited to hospitals that have implemented formal quality assurance systems, and the findings may not apply to smaller hospitals or healthcare centers in the state. The study may be constrained by the availability of data and the cooperation of hospital administrators and staff.
