Background of the Study

Leadership ethics, which encompasses the moral principles and values that guide decision-making by leaders, plays a crucial role in shaping the behavior and attitudes of employees. In the telecommunications industry, where competition is fierce, employee commitment is essential for organizational success. Ethical leadership has been linked to higher levels of employee motivation, job satisfaction, and commitment, particularly in organizations such as MTN Nigeria, which is one of the largest telecom companies in the country.

In Bauchi State, where MTN operates, the role of leadership ethics in fostering employee commitment remains an under-explored area. Research suggests that ethical leadership improves the trust employees have in their leaders, enhances organizational culture, and reduces turnover (Afolabi & Kalu, 2022). This study aims to assess the impact of leadership ethics on employee commitment in MTN Nigeria’s operations in Bauchi State, providing insights into how ethical leadership practices can influence employee behavior and contribute to organizational success.

Statement of the Problem

Employee commitment is a critical factor for success in the telecommunications sector, especially in a competitive market such as Nigeria. However, there is a gap in understanding the specific impact of leadership ethics on employee commitment in MTN Nigeria, particularly in Bauchi State. The study seeks to fill this gap by examining how the ethical conduct of leaders within the organization influences employee loyalty, engagement, and overall commitment to the company.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effect of leadership ethics on employee commitment in MTN Nigeria in Bauchi State.
  2. To assess the relationship between ethical leadership practices and employee job satisfaction, loyalty, and performance.
  3. To identify the challenges and opportunities for MTN Nigeria in promoting ethical leadership to increase employee commitment.

Research Questions

  1. How does leadership ethics influence employee commitment in MTN Nigeria in Bauchi State?
  2. What ethical practices by MTN Nigeria leaders have the most significant impact on employee commitment?
  3. What challenges does MTN Nigeria face in maintaining ethical leadership and fostering employee commitment in Bauchi State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is a positive relationship between leadership ethics and employee commitment in MTN Nigeria.
  2. Ethical leadership in MTN Nigeria increases employee job satisfaction and organizational loyalty.
  3. MTN Nigeria faces challenges in ensuring leadership ethics are consistently followed, which affects employee commitment.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on MTN Nigeria’s operations in Bauchi State, with particular attention to leadership ethics and its impact on employee commitment. Limitations include the difficulty of measuring ethical leadership quantitatively and the potential for bias in employee responses.
