Background of the Study
Succession planning is a strategic process that ensures the continuity of leadership by identifying and developing future leaders within an organization. It plays a pivotal role in maintaining organizational stability, driving performance, and fostering employee commitment (Rothwell, 2023). In today’s competitive business environment, effective succession planning is essential for leadership development and the long-term sustainability of organizations.
Dangote Sugar Refinery, a major player in Nigeria’s manufacturing sector, operates in Jigawa State, where the local labor market is characterized by skill gaps and limited leadership development opportunities. Succession planning is particularly critical for the refinery to ensure the availability of competent leaders capable of driving growth and managing complex operations. However, challenges such as inadequate training, lack of mentorship, and resistance to succession planning often hinder its implementation (Ibrahim & Nwankwo, 2024).
This study examines the role of succession planning in leadership development at Dangote Sugar Refinery, focusing on its impact on organizational performance and sustainability.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of succession planning, many organizations in Nigeria, including Dangote Sugar Refinery, face challenges in implementing effective programs. Issues such as limited resources, lack of structured mentorship programs, and employee resistance to succession planning undermine leadership development efforts (Olawale & Adeoye, 2023).
In Jigawa State, where access to leadership training programs is limited, the absence of a robust succession planning framework jeopardizes the organization’s ability to maintain leadership continuity. This study addresses the need to critically analyze the role of succession planning in leadership development at Dangote Sugar Refinery.
