Background of the Study
Recruiting skilled healthcare professionals has been an ongoing challenge for many hospitals across Nigeria, particularly in Kogi State. Despite the critical importance of qualified medical staff in providing high-quality healthcare services, hospitals in Kogi State, both public and private, face significant difficulties in attracting and retaining skilled healthcare professionals. These challenges stem from various factors, including insufficient financial incentives, limited opportunities for professional development, and unfavorable working conditions (Omotayo et al., 2023). The shortage of skilled healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, laboratory technicians, and pharmacists, adversely affects the delivery of healthcare services, leading to delayed treatments, increased workloads on existing staff, and suboptimal patient care.

Kogi State, situated in the central region of Nigeria, has a healthcare system that is under considerable pressure due to rapid population growth, limited infrastructure, and inadequate funding. While efforts have been made to improve healthcare infrastructure and increase the number of healthcare workers, the persistent challenges in recruitment remain a major barrier to the development of a robust healthcare system (Ibrahim & Musa, 2024). The lack of skilled professionals affects not only the efficiency of hospitals but also their capacity to provide specialized services, which are critical in addressing the healthcare needs of the population.

This study will assess the challenges faced by hospitals in Kogi State in recruiting skilled healthcare professionals and explore possible solutions to these issues. The findings will contribute to a better understanding of the barriers to effective recruitment in healthcare institutions and offer policy recommendations aimed at improving workforce development in the state.

Statement of the Problem
Hospitals in Kogi State experience significant difficulties in recruiting skilled healthcare professionals, which adversely impacts the quality of healthcare delivery. The shortage of qualified personnel in key medical areas has resulted in poor patient outcomes, reduced access to specialized care, and overburdened healthcare workers. Despite the recognized need for skilled professionals in the healthcare sector, the persistent recruitment challenges remain inadequately addressed. This study seeks to explore the key barriers to recruiting skilled healthcare professionals in Kogi State hospitals and examine potential solutions to improve the recruitment process.
