Background of the Study

Corporate governance and corporate social responsibility (CSR) are interconnected concepts that influence the sustainability and ethical practices of organizations. Effective governance frameworks ensure accountability and drive CSR initiatives, particularly in industries such as agribusiness, which have significant social and environmental impacts (Adeola & Bello, 2023).

In Nigeria, the agribusiness sector is critical for food security, employment, and rural development. However, weak governance structures have hindered CSR engagement, leading to environmental degradation, poor labor practices, and community dissatisfaction (Oluwaseun & Eze, 2024).

This study investigates the impact of corporate governance on CSR engagement in agribusiness firms in Zamfara State, with a focus on how governance practices can enhance social and environmental outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

CSR engagement in Nigeria’s agribusiness sector is often limited by inadequate governance frameworks. Weak accountability, lack of stakeholder involvement, and insufficient regulatory compliance are among the challenges faced by agribusiness firms in Zamfara State (Bello & Musa, 2023). These issues not only affect the sustainability of the sector but also damage community relations and corporate reputations.

This study aims to explore the relationship between corporate governance and CSR engagement, identifying factors that hinder or promote effective CSR practices.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the governance structures of agribusiness firms in Zamfara State.

  2. To examine the impact of corporate governance on CSR engagement.

  3. To propose strategies for enhancing CSR practices through improved governance.

Research Questions

  1. What are the governance structures of agribusiness firms in Zamfara State?

  2. How does corporate governance affect CSR engagement in these firms?

  3. What strategies can enhance CSR engagement in the agribusiness sector?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Corporate governance does not significantly impact CSR engagement in agribusiness firms.

  2. There is no significant relationship between governance practices and community satisfaction.

  3. Existing governance structures are sufficient to drive CSR engagement in agribusiness firms.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on agribusiness firms in Zamfara State, exploring the link between governance and CSR engagement. Limitations include the generalizability of findings to other sectors and regions, as well as potential difficulties in accessing detailed governance data.
