Background of the Study

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are pivotal in addressing societal challenges, particularly in developing nations like Nigeria. These organizations often bridge the gap in public service delivery, focusing on areas such as poverty alleviation, education, and healthcare (Okeke et al., 2023). Financial accountability and governance are critical components of their operational efficiency, as they rely heavily on donor funding and community support. Inadequate financial accountability and poor governance have been linked to the mismanagement of resources, donor mistrust, and organizational inefficiency (Adebayo & Musa, 2024).

ActionAid Nigeria, a prominent NGO operating in Kano State, has significantly impacted grassroots development. However, the organization has faced challenges related to transparency in financial reporting and adherence to governance standards (Ibrahim & Ayo, 2025). With increasing scrutiny from donors, stakeholders, and regulatory bodies, the need for robust accountability and governance mechanisms has never been more critical.

Research suggests that implementing effective governance frameworks and transparent financial practices enhances organizational credibility and donor confidence (Adeola et al., 2023). Despite various reforms and capacity-building efforts, gaps in governance persist, particularly in Northern Nigeria, where socio-economic challenges further complicate operational dynamics. This study, therefore, seeks to investigate the financial accountability and governance structures of ActionAid Nigeria in Kano State, aiming to provide actionable insights for improved organizational performance.

Statement of the Problem

Non-governmental organizations in Nigeria face increasing pressure to demonstrate accountability and good governance practices. Reports indicate that a significant number of NGOs, including ActionAid Nigeria, have struggled with issues of financial mismanagement, poor transparency, and weak internal control systems (Afolabi & Umeh, 2023). These challenges undermine donor trust, reduce community impact, and hinder the overall development agenda.

In Kano State, where socio-economic vulnerabilities are pronounced, the role of NGOs is particularly vital. However, the lack of comprehensive governance frameworks and insufficient financial oversight has led to inefficiencies in resource allocation and project implementation (Ibrahim, 2024). Despite attempts at reform, many organizations continue to grapple with these systemic issues, raising concerns about the sustainability of their operations.

This problem not only jeopardizes the credibility of ActionAid Nigeria but also poses broader implications for the NGO sector in Nigeria. Thus, there is a pressing need to investigate the root causes of these challenges, evaluate existing governance practices, and propose strategies for improvement.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the current financial accountability practices of ActionAid Nigeria in Kano State.

  2. To examine the governance structures and their effectiveness in promoting transparency and accountability.

  3. To identify challenges hindering financial accountability and propose actionable solutions.

Research Questions

  1. What are the current financial accountability practices of ActionAid Nigeria in Kano State?

  2. How effective are the governance structures in ensuring transparency and accountability?

  3. What challenges hinder financial accountability, and what strategies can address them?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is no significant relationship between financial accountability practices and donor trust in ActionAid Nigeria.

  2. Governance structures have no significant impact on transparency and accountability.

  3. The challenges hindering financial accountability cannot be mitigated by existing strategies.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the financial accountability and governance practices of ActionAid Nigeria, with specific reference to its operations in Kano State. While it provides insights into challenges and best practices, the findings may not be generalizable to all NGOs in Nigeria. Time constraints and limited access to financial records may also pose challenges during data collection.
