Background of the Study
Whistleblowing is a critical mechanism for exposing corporate fraud and promoting accountability in organizations. By reporting unethical practices, whistleblowers play a vital role in maintaining corporate integrity and safeguarding stakeholder interests (Adewuyi & Bello, 2023).
In Yobe State, corporate fraud remains a persistent issue due to weak governance structures, inadequate protections for whistleblowers, and a culture of silence. The absence of robust reporting frameworks further exacerbates these challenges, leading to financial losses and diminished public trust (Ahmed & Musa, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Corporate fraud in Yobe State often goes undetected due to fear of retaliation against whistleblowers and limited implementation of whistleblower protection laws. Although the Nigerian Whistleblower Protection Act provides a legal framework, its enforcement is inconsistent, reducing its effectiveness in addressing corporate fraud (Okoro & Yusuf, 2023).
This study examines the role of whistleblowers in exposing corporate fraud and explores ways to strengthen whistleblowing mechanisms in Yobe State.
