Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Women’s participation in politics is a crucial factor in achieving gender equality and strengthening democracy. In Jos South Local Government, Plateau State, women’s involvement in local governance and political activities has been growing, but challenges such as cultural barriers, lack of political education, and insufficient support structures persist. This study will evaluate the level of grassroots political participation among women in Jos South.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although women make up a significant portion of the electorate, their political participation, especially at the grassroots level, remains limited. Despite efforts to encourage women’s participation in politics, traditional norms and other socio-cultural factors hinder their full engagement in political activities. This study seeks to investigate the factors affecting women’s grassroots political participation in Jos South.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of women’s participation in grassroots political activities in Jos South.
  2. To identify the barriers that prevent women from participating in local governance and political decision-making.
  3. To propose strategies for increasing women’s political participation at the grassroots level.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What is the level of women’s involvement in grassroots political activities in Jos South?
  2. What are the key factors hindering women’s participation in grassroots politics?
  3. What initiatives can be implemented to encourage more women to engage in political activities at the grassroots level?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Women’s political participation at the grassroots level in Jos South is limited due to socio-cultural, economic, and educational barriers.
  2. Increased political awareness and support systems can enhance women’s participation in local politics.
  3. Empowering women through education and policy reforms can lead to greater involvement in grassroots political activities.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities for increasing women’s political participation at the grassroots level. The findings will help inform policies and programs aimed at promoting gender equality in political engagement in Jos South and beyond.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on grassroots political participation among women in Jos South during local government elections. Limitations include the difficulty in measuring the full extent of participation and the challenge of identifying all barriers affecting women’s involvement.
