Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Media plays a pivotal role in shaping public opinion during elections. In Nigeria, the issue of media ownership and political bias has been a concern, particularly during election periods. In Jos North Local Government, Plateau State, the concentration of media ownership in the hands of certain political elites may influence the way electoral information is presented, potentially skewing voter perception. This study aims to examine the relationship between media ownership and political bias during elections, analyzing how media outlets in Jos North shape electoral outcomes (Tukur & Kabiru, 2024).

1.2 Statement of the Problem
The ownership and control of media outlets often lead to political bias, with media organizations promoting the interests of their owners or political sponsors. In Jos North, the political affiliation of media houses may result in the dissemination of biased information, negatively affecting voter perceptions and decisions. This study will explore how media ownership influences political bias and how such bias impacts election outcomes in Jos North Local Government (Ismail & Bala, 2023).

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the extent of political bias in media coverage during elections in Jos North Local Government.
  2. To assess the impact of media ownership on the objectivity of electoral reporting in Jos North.
  3. To evaluate how media bias influences voter behavior and electoral outcomes in Jos North.

1.4 Research Questions

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Media ownership significantly influences political bias in electoral reporting in Jos North Local Government.
  2. Media bias leads to a shift in voter perceptions and preferences during elections in Jos North.
  3. Political bias in the media has a measurable impact on electoral outcomes in Jos North Local Government.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to understanding the relationship between media ownership and political bias, highlighting its impact on the electoral process. The findings will provide insights into how media bias affects democracy and voter decision-making in Nigeria, offering recommendations for improving media neutrality and ensuring fairer elections.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on media ownership and political bias during elections in Jos North Local Government, Plateau State. Limitations include the difficulty in measuring media bias objectively and the challenge of accessing media organizations’ internal workings.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Media Ownership: The control or possession of media outlets by individuals, organizations, or political entities.
  • Political Bias: The inclination to present information in a way that favors particular political views or parties.
  • Voter Behavior: The actions and decisions made by voters during elections, including their choice of candidates and political parties.
