Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Electoral violence has been a significant issue in Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly in areas with high levels of political competition and regional tensions. In Gusau Local Government, Zamfara State, the prevalence of electoral violence has affected voter turnout, candidate participation, and the overall integrity of the electoral process. For women, electoral violence poses a particular challenge, as it often discourages female political candidates from engaging in the electoral process, reducing their political aspirations and representation. Women face gender-specific barriers in politics, and the threat of violence further exacerbates these challenges. This study seeks to assess the relationship between electoral violence and women’s political aspirations in Gusau Local Government, focusing on the ways in which violence impacts women’s participation in elections and their ability to pursue political careers (Zubairu & Abdullahi, 2024).

1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Gusau Local Government, electoral violence has created an environment of fear and insecurity, which disproportionately affects female politicians and their supporters. Women who aspire to political office are often deterred by the threat of violence, intimidation, and harassment during elections. This study aims to examine how electoral violence impacts women’s political aspirations in Gusau, assessing the barriers faced by women in pursuing political office and their strategies for overcoming these challenges (Sani & Bello, 2023).

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of electoral violence on women’s political aspirations and participation in Gusau Local Government.
  2. To examine the factors that contribute to the marginalization of women in the electoral process in Gusau.
  3. To recommend strategies for reducing electoral violence and promoting greater female participation in politics in Gusau Local Government.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How does electoral violence affect women’s political aspirations and participation in Gusau Local Government?
  2. What factors contribute to the underrepresentation of women in the political process in Gusau?
  3. How can electoral violence be reduced to promote greater political engagement and representation of women in Gusau Local Government?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Electoral violence negatively affects women’s political aspirations and participation in Gusau Local Government.
  2. Women face greater challenges in the electoral process due to gender-based violence and intimidation.
  3. Reducing electoral violence will increase female political participation and representation in Gusau Local Government.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is important as it addresses the intersection of electoral violence and women’s political participation, providing a deeper understanding of how violence undermines gender equality in politics. The findings will offer insights for policymakers, electoral bodies, and civil society organizations working to create a safer and more inclusive political environment for women.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on Gusau Local Government and examines the impact of electoral violence on women’s political aspirations. It does not extend to other local governments in Zamfara State. Limitations include difficulties in gathering data from women who have experienced electoral violence due to fear of reprisal and the sensitivity of the topic.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Electoral Violence: Physical or psychological harm inflicted on individuals or groups during an electoral process to influence the outcome of an election.
  • Women’s Political Aspirations: The desire and motivation of women to participate in politics, seek political office, and engage in governance.
  • Political Representation: The participation of individuals or groups in political processes, especially holding elected office, in a way that reflects their interests and needs.
