Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
The media serves as a cornerstone of democracy, playing a critical role in promoting electoral transparency by disseminating information, exposing malpractice, and fostering accountability (Adamu & Umar, 2024). In the Nigerian context, where electoral processes are often marred by allegations of irregularities, the media acts as a watchdog, ensuring that elections are conducted in a free and fair manner. Katsina Local Government, as one of the key political hubs in Katsina State, has witnessed significant media involvement during elections. Both traditional and digital media platforms have been instrumental in shaping public perception, highlighting irregularities, and advocating for reforms. However, questions remain about the effectiveness of the media in fully promoting electoral transparency, particularly in rural areas with limited access to information (Bashir & Abdullahi, 2025). This study examines the role of the media in fostering electoral transparency in Katsina Local Government.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While the media has made significant contributions to promoting electoral transparency in Katsina Local Government, challenges such as media bias, misinformation, and limited access to credible information have undermined its effectiveness. Additionally, the concentration of media coverage in urban centers often leaves rural communities underrepresented in electoral discourse. These issues raise concerns about the capacity of the media to serve as an impartial arbiter and advocate for transparency (Ahmed & Bello, 2024). This study aims to assess the role of the media in promoting electoral transparency, identifying both successes and areas for improvement.
