Background of the Study

IT-enabled supply chain management (IT-SCM) has revolutionized the manufacturing sector, providing tools for seamless communication, inventory management, and process optimization. Technologies such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, artificial intelligence, and blockchain enhance transparency, reduce costs, and improve decision-making (World Economic Forum, 2024). For manufacturing firms in Kano State, IT-SCM offers significant potential to address challenges such as inefficiencies in production and distribution.

The manufacturing sector in Kano State is critical to Nigeria’s economy, contributing to job creation and industrial growth. However, traditional supply chain processes in the region often result in delays, wastage, and inefficiencies (Aliyu et al., 2024). The adoption of IT-SCM tools could improve competitiveness by enabling real-time tracking, predictive analytics, and collaborative networks. This study investigates the extent to which IT-SCM enhances operational performance in manufacturing firms in Kano State.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the global adoption of IT-enabled supply chain management, many manufacturing firms in Kano State continue to rely on traditional methods, leading to inefficiencies and high operational costs. Issues such as inadequate infrastructure, lack of skilled personnel, and resistance to change hinder the effective implementation of IT-SCM tools (Okeke et al., 2024). This study aims to assess how IT-SCM impacts operational performance and identifies the barriers to its adoption in Kano State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the level of adoption of IT-SCM in manufacturing firms in Kano State.

  2. To assess the impact of IT-SCM on operational performance and cost efficiency.

  3. To identify challenges faced by manufacturing firms in implementing IT-SCM.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of adoption of IT-SCM in manufacturing firms in Kano State?

  2. How does IT-SCM influence operational performance and cost efficiency?

  3. What are the challenges faced by manufacturing firms in implementing IT-SCM?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is no significant relationship between IT-SCM adoption and operational performance.

  2. IT-SCM does not significantly reduce operational costs in manufacturing firms.

  3. The challenges of implementing IT-SCM are not significant in manufacturing firms in Kano State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on manufacturing firms in Kano State, analyzing their use of IT-SCM tools in inventory management, production, and distribution. Limitations may include restricted access to proprietary supply chain data and the variability in technology adoption among firms.

Definitions of Terms

  • IT-Enabled Supply Chain Management (IT-SCM): The use of information technology to optimize supply chain activities.

  • Operational Performance: The efficiency and effectiveness of production and distribution processes.

  • Manufacturing Firms: Companies involved in the production of goods from raw materials.
