Background of the Study

Public relations (PR) plays a significant role in shaping political candidates' public images and influencing voters' perceptions. In Gombe LGA, Gombe State, PR strategies have been increasingly utilized by gubernatorial candidates to enhance their visibility and connect with voters (Aminu & Usman, 2023). This study examines the role of public relations in political image building, focusing on the gubernatorial candidates in the most recent elections in Gombe LGA.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While the role of public relations in political campaigns is widely acknowledged, there is limited research on its specific impact in Gombe LGA, especially in the context of gubernatorial candidates. Public relations strategies, including media campaigns, public appearances, and messaging, are critical in determining the success of candidates in an election (Ali & Haruna, 2023). This study seeks to evaluate how effectively public relations strategies were employed to build the political image of gubernatorial candidates in Gombe LGA.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the role of public relations in shaping the political image of gubernatorial candidates in Gombe LGA.

  2. To analyze the effectiveness of PR strategies in influencing voter perceptions and decisions in Gombe LGA.

  3. To examine the contribution of media and public relations campaigns to the success of gubernatorial candidates in Gombe LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How do public relations strategies contribute to the political image building of gubernatorial candidates in Gombe LGA?

  2. What impact do public relations efforts have on voter perceptions and decisions in Gombe LGA?

  3. How effective are media and public relations campaigns in enhancing the political success of gubernatorial candidates in Gombe LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Public relations strategies significantly contribute to the political image building of gubernatorial candidates in Gombe LGA.

  2. Public relations efforts influence voter perceptions and decisions in Gombe LGA.

  3. Media and public relations campaigns enhance the political success of gubernatorial candidates in Gombe LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will provide valuable insights into how public relations strategies can influence political campaigns and contribute to electoral success. The findings will be helpful for political candidates, PR professionals, and political consultants seeking to improve their image-building efforts.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on gubernatorial candidates in Gombe LGA during the 2023 election period. It will examine PR strategies such as media campaigns, public appearances, and press releases, but will not extend to other forms of electoral strategies like grassroots mobilization.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Public Relations: The practice of managing and disseminating information from an individual or organization to the public to influence their perceptions and behavior.

  • Political Image Building: The process of creating and promoting a positive public image of a political candidate to enhance their appeal to voters.

  • Media Campaigns: Coordinated efforts to promote a political message through various media platforms, including television, radio, and social media.
