Background of the Study
Traditional media, including radio and newspapers, have been the cornerstone of political communication, particularly in regions with limited access to modern communication technologies (Usman & Ibrahim, 2024). In Bida LGA, Niger State, radio stations and local newspapers play a critical role in informing the public about political developments, candidates’ positions, and election-related activities (Aminu & Haruna, 2023). These media outlets help bridge the information gap in rural areas, where social media penetration is low, and they serve as essential tools for civic education and voter mobilization (Bello & Sulaimon, 2023). This study explores the role of traditional media, specifically radio and newspapers, in political communication during the 2023 elections in Bida LGA, examining their effectiveness in shaping public opinion and influencing electoral behavior.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the acknowledged role of traditional media in political communication, the specific impact of radio and newspaper coverage on political engagement and voter behavior in Bida LGA remains under-researched. While these media forms have been integral in past elections, their current relevance and effectiveness in the digital age are questioned, particularly in rural areas where exposure to modern media platforms like social media may be limited (Kasim & Dangana, 2023). This study aims to assess the role of radio and newspaper coverage in political communication and voter decision-making in Bida LGA during the 2023 elections.
