Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Political thuggery refers to the use of violence, intimidation, and other unlawful tactics by political actors to influence electoral outcomes. In Nigeria, political thuggery has been a persistent issue, with armed groups or "political thugs" being used by politicians to disrupt elections, intimidate voters, and create an atmosphere of fear. In Bauchi LGA, Bauchi State, political thuggery has been a significant problem, particularly during election periods, undermining the integrity of the electoral process. This study aims to assess the impact of political thuggery on electoral processes in Bauchi LGA, examining its effects on voter turnout, election results, and the overall legitimacy of elections.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Political thuggery poses a serious threat to the integrity and credibility of elections in Bauchi LGA. Acts of violence, voter intimidation, and the disruption of polling processes can lead to a disenfranchised electorate, decreased voter turnout, and an overall lack of confidence in the electoral system. 1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on the role of political thuggery in the electoral processes in Bauchi LGA. Limitations may include difficulties in gathering data on illegal activities and potential biases due to the sensitive nature of political violence.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
