Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Traditional institutions, such as monarchies, councils of elders, and village heads, have played a central role in conflict resolution in many parts of Nigeria, particularly in Northern Nigeria. In Kano Municipal LGA, Kano State, traditional rulers and community leaders are often called upon to mediate and resolve conflicts, especially those arising from ethnic, religious, and political tensions. Traditional conflict resolution mechanisms are deeply rooted in the culture and history of the people and are seen as a means to promote peace and social cohesion (Giwa & Mohammed, 2023). This study will explore the role of traditional institutions in conflict resolution in Kano Municipal, examining their effectiveness in handling disputes and promoting harmony within the community.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the important role of traditional institutions in conflict resolution, challenges such as the erosion of their authority, competition with modern legal systems, and the influence of political actors have weakened their effectiveness. In Kano Municipal LGA, while traditional rulers are still involved in mediating conflicts, their capacity to resolve disputes is increasingly being questioned due to these challenges. This study seeks to investigate the role of traditional institutions in conflict resolution, focusing on their strategies, limitations, and the evolving dynamics between traditional and modern conflict resolution mechanisms.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
- To examine the role of traditional institutions in conflict resolution in Kano Municipal LGA.
- To assess the effectiveness of traditional conflict resolution mechanisms in promoting peace and social cohesion.
- To explore the challenges faced by traditional institutions in resolving conflicts in Kano Municipal LGA.

1.5 Research Hypotheses

- Challenges such as erosion of authority and political interference undermine the effectiveness of traditional institutions in conflict resolution.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to the understanding of how traditional institutions operate in the context of modern governance and conflict resolution. It will offer insights for policymakers, traditional leaders, and civil society organizations on how to strengthen traditional institutions in promoting peace and resolving conflicts.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on Kano Municipal LGA, Kano State, and will examine the role of traditional institutions in conflict resolution within this locality. Limitations may include the difficulty of accessing accurate information from traditional leaders and the influence of political interests on the study.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
- Traditional Institutions: Indigenous structures of leadership and governance, such as monarchies, councils of elders, and community leaders, that play a role in maintaining social order and resolving conflicts.
- Conflict Resolution: The process of addressing and resolving disputes, often through negotiation, mediation, or arbitration, to restore peace and harmony.
- Social Cohesion: The degree to which individuals and communities are united and work together in a cooperative and harmonious manner.
