Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Women’s political participation and representation are fundamental to the democratic process, as they contribute to diverse perspectives in governance and policymaking. Lafia LGA, Nasarawa State, presents an important case for examining women’s involvement in politics, given the regional challenges related to gender inequality and the underrepresentation of women in political positions. Despite the growing recognition of the need for gender inclusion, women’s political participation remains limited due to cultural, social, and political barriers. This study will assess women’s political participation in Lafia LGA and explore the factors that influence their representation in local governance (Abdullahi & Bako, 2024). The study will focus on the extent to which women are involved in the political process, their representation in elected positions, and the role of political parties and civil society in promoting gender inclusion.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Women’s underrepresentation in political offices remains a significant problem in Lafia LGA, despite efforts by various organizations to enhance women’s political engagement. Social norms, limited access to resources, and discriminatory practices continue to hinder women’s full participation in local governance. This study will address the challenges that women face in Lafia LGA in terms of political participation and representation and identify strategies to overcome these barriers.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of women’s political participation and representation in Lafia LGA.
  2. To identify the barriers that limit women’s political participation in Lafia LGA.
  3. To explore the role of political parties and civil society organizations in promoting women’s political engagement in Lafia LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What is the level of women’s political participation and representation in Lafia LGA?
  2. What barriers limit women’s political participation in Lafia LGA?
  3. How do political parties and civil society organizations promote women’s political engagement in Lafia LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Women’s political participation in Lafia LGA is low due to cultural and social barriers.
  2. The underrepresentation of women in Lafia LGA is linked to gender-based discrimination in political processes.
  3. Civil society organizations and political parties positively influence women’s political participation in Lafia LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will contribute to the understanding of women’s political participation in Lafia LGA and offer recommendations for improving their representation and involvement in local governance. It will be valuable to policymakers, gender advocates, and community leaders who seek to promote gender equality in political processes.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on Lafia LGA, Nasarawa State, and will specifically examine women’s participation in local governance and political processes. Limitations may include challenges in accessing data on women’s participation and the influence of cultural factors on responses from interviewees.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Women’s Political Participation: The involvement of women in political activities such as voting, running for office, and participating in political decision-making processes.
