Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Women’s political participation and representation are fundamental to the democratic process, as they contribute to diverse perspectives in governance and policymaking. Lafia LGA, Nasarawa State, presents an important case for examining women’s involvement in politics, given the regional challenges related to gender inequality and the underrepresentation of women in political positions. Despite the growing recognition of the need for gender inclusion, women’s political participation remains limited due to cultural, social, and political barriers. This study will assess women’s political participation in Lafia LGA and explore the factors that influence their representation in local governance (Abdullahi & Bako, 2024). The study will focus on the extent to which women are involved in the political process, their representation in elected positions, and the role of political parties and civil society in promoting gender inclusion.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Women’s underrepresentation in political offices remains a significant problem in Lafia LGA, despite efforts by various organizations to enhance women’s political engagement. Social norms, limited access to resources, and discriminatory practices continue to hinder women’s full participation in local governance. This study will address the challenges that women face in Lafia LGA in terms of political participation and representation and identify strategies to overcome these barriers.
