Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Local government councils are the closest governmental institutions to the people, and their effectiveness in service delivery directly impacts community development and quality of life. In Sabon Gari LGA, Kaduna State, waste management is a key service provided by the local government. Proper waste management is essential for maintaining public health, enhancing the aesthetic quality of the environment, and preventing environmental hazards. However, despite the significance of waste management, there are reports of inefficiencies and challenges in the way local government councils handle this essential service. This study will explore the role of Sabon Gari LGA’s local government council in waste management, assess its effectiveness in service delivery, and identify the key factors influencing its performance (Sani & Olatunji, 2023).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the importance of waste management for public health and the environment, Sabon Gari LGA faces challenges such as poor infrastructure, inadequate funding, and lack of public awareness, which undermine the effectiveness of the local government’s waste management efforts.
