Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Women’s groups have long been active participants in political advocacy, particularly in areas of social and political change. In Jos North LGA, Plateau State, various women’s organizations are pivotal in promoting women’s rights, gender equality, and political participation. These groups have historically mobilized women to engage in political activities such as voting, running for office, and advocating for policies that address gender-specific issues (Adeyemo & Ayuba, 2024). However, the extent to which these groups influence women's political participation remains understudied, particularly in the context of local elections. This study aims to assess the role of women’s groups in Jos North LGA in encouraging political participation among women and how their advocacy efforts have contributed to women's inclusion in local governance.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the active involvement of women’s groups in political advocacy, women’s political participation in Jos North LGA remains relatively low, especially in terms of elected office-holding. While these groups engage in various activities to raise awareness and promote political engagement, their impact on increasing women's political representation at the local level is not fully understood. This study will assess the specific role of women’s advocacy organizations in influencing political participation and identify the challenges these groups face in mobilizing women to actively participate in local elections.
