Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Films, as a universal form of communication, hold the potential to transcend cultural and linguistic barriers, fostering greater understanding and dialogue between different social groups. In Nigeria, a country marked by a rich diversity of ethnicities, languages, and cultural practices, the role of film in promoting intercultural dialogue is of critical importance. This is particularly true among youths, who are increasingly exposed to diverse cultural expressions through the mass media. In Kaltungo Local Government Area, Gombe State, where several ethnic groups coexist, film can serve as a bridge to enhance communication and foster mutual respect among youths from different cultural backgrounds. By presenting stories that highlight the values, traditions, and everyday lives of various communities, films can break down stereotypes, encourage tolerance, and promote social cohesion. This study aims to examine the role of film in promoting intercultural dialogue among youths in Kaltungo, focusing on how films can influence their perceptions of other ethnic groups and enhance cross-cultural understanding.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the potential of film as a tool for promoting intercultural dialogue, there is a lack of empirical research on how films are being used to address cultural differences and promote unity among youths, particularly in areas like Kaltungo, Gombe State. Many youths in Kaltungo are exposed to a variety of cultural influences, but there is still a significant gap in understanding and communication between different ethnic groups. This lack of intercultural dialogue can lead to misunderstandings, prejudice, and social division. The problem lies in exploring how films can be leveraged to foster positive intercultural exchanges, challenge stereotypes, and encourage youths to engage in constructive conversations about their cultural differences. This study seeks to investigate the role of films in promoting intercultural dialogue and social harmony among youths in Kaltungo Local Government Area.

By examining the role of films in shaping perceptions and fostering social cohesion, the research contributes to the broader discourse on the power of film in addressing social and cultural divides. The findings can inform filmmakers, educators, and policymakers on the potential of films as a tool for intercultural communication, providing recommendations for the production and dissemination of culturally sensitive films that promote unity and understanding.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on the role of films in promoting intercultural dialogue among youths in Kaltungo Local Government Area, Gombe State.
