Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

In recent years, digital technology has dramatically transformed various industries, and the film sector is no exception. With the advent of digital platforms, filmmakers now have unprecedented opportunities to distribute their works globally. This technological shift has opened new doors for both independent and commercial filmmakers, enabling them to bypass traditional distribution channels such as cinemas and television networks. In Offa Local Government Area, Kwara State, filmmakers are increasingly utilizing digital platforms for distributing their films, reaching wider audiences and gaining greater control over the distribution process. Digital distribution methods, including video-on-demand (VOD), streaming services, and online sales, have become integral to the modern film distribution ecosystem. These digital platforms offer filmmakers the ability to distribute films at a fraction of the cost of traditional distribution methods, making it easier for emerging filmmakers to showcase their works. However, the adoption of digital technology in film distribution also brings challenges, including concerns over piracy, intellectual property rights, and the saturation of online content. This study seeks to examine the impact of digital technology on the distribution of films among filmmakers in Offa Local Government Area, exploring the advantages and challenges associated with digital distribution and its role in shaping the local film industry.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The widespread adoption of digital technology in the film industry has revolutionized how films are distributed and consumed. In Offa Local Government Area, Kwara State, filmmakers are increasingly relying on digital platforms to distribute their films. However, while digital distribution presents significant opportunities, it also raises critical concerns, particularly regarding piracy, the commercialization of content, and the ability of filmmakers to monetize their works effectively. The problem lies in understanding the full extent of digital technology's impact on film distribution in this region, where filmmakers may face unique challenges compared to their counterparts in larger urban centers. There is limited research focusing on how digital platforms have transformed film distribution in Offa and the surrounding areas, and this study seeks to address this gap by examining the benefits and limitations of digital distribution from the perspective of local filmmakers.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

By focusing on Offa Local Government Area, the study contributes to a better understanding of how local filmmakers are leveraging digital platforms and the challenges they face in the digital distribution landscape. The findings will be useful for policymakers, filmmakers, and digital platform providers in optimizing film distribution strategies and addressing the challenges that may hinder the success of digital distribution in local communities.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on filmmakers in Offa Local Government Area, Kwara State, and examines the impact of digital technology on their film distribution practices. The scope is limited to this specific region and may not fully capture the broader trends in the film industry across Nigeria. One limitation of the study is that it may not account for all the technological and financial constraints faced by filmmakers, as these can vary widely depending on individual circumstances.
