Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
National unity is essential for the stability and development of any country, and in a diverse society like Nigeria, fostering unity among its various ethnic, cultural, and religious groups is particularly important. Films, as a form of mass communication, have the power to transcend boundaries and communicate shared values, experiences, and narratives. Local filmmakers, particularly those in Niger State, have a unique opportunity to promote national unity by producing films that reflect the diverse cultures and peoples of Nigeria, while fostering a sense of common identity and understanding among youths (Nwosu & Alabi, 2023). Bida North Local Government Area in Niger State is home to a mix of ethnic and cultural groups, providing a rich context for exploring how local films can contribute to unity. By addressing common themes such as peace, cooperation, and national pride, local filmmakers have the potential to influence youth perceptions of national unity and promote a more cohesive society. This study aims to investigate the role of local film producers in promoting national unity among youths, specifically in Bida North, evaluating how their films reflect national identity and contribute to fostering a sense of belonging and unity among young Nigerians.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity, the country faces significant challenges related to ethnic and religious tensions, which can threaten national unity. Youths, who represent the future of the nation, are particularly susceptible to these divisions, and the media, including films, plays a critical role in shaping their attitudes towards these issues. While local filmmakers in Bida North produce films that reflect local cultures and experiences, there is a lack of research on the extent to which these films promote national unity. This study seeks to fill this gap by investigating how local film producers in Bida North contribute to national unity, exploring how their films foster positive relationships between different ethnic and cultural groups, and examining the impact of these films on the perceptions and attitudes of youths towards national integration.

By understanding how local films can bridge ethnic and cultural divides, the research can inform filmmakers, educators, and policymakers about the potential of media in fostering national integration. The findings could also encourage the production of more culturally inclusive films that promote unity and cooperation among Nigerian youths.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on local film producers in Bida North Local Government Area, Niger State, and their role in promoting national unity.
