Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Biographical films, which portray the lives of real individuals, have gained popularity not only as entertainment but also as tools for education and inspiration. These films often highlight the achievements, struggles, and resilience of prominent figures from various fields, serving as powerful narratives that motivate viewers to aspire toward similar successes. In Nigeria, the use of biographical films in educational settings has seen a rise, especially among secondary school students who are at a formative stage of their personal development (Okoro & Eze, 2023). In Lafia North Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, secondary school students are increasingly exposed to biographical films, with educators recognizing their potential to shape students' values, ambitions, and perceptions of success. This study explores the influence of biographical films on promoting role models among these students, assessing how films about historical figures, leaders, and change-makers contribute to the development of positive values and aspirations.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In Lafia North Local Government Area, secondary school students are often influenced by various role models, ranging from family members to public figures. However, there is limited research on how biographical films specifically contribute to shaping students' perceptions of role models and their subsequent behaviors. While some students may identify with these figures, others may not fully understand the challenges and achievements depicted in such films, leading to misconceptions about success (Akinwale & Sule, 2023). As biographical films often portray idealized versions of real-life stories, it is crucial to understand how they influence students' aspirations, decision-making, and personal development. This study aims to examine whether biographical films are effective in promoting positive role models among secondary school students, particularly focusing on their impact on students' attitudes toward education, ambition, and community involvement.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it explores the educational potential of biographical films as a medium for role model promotion. It offers insights into how the portrayal of historical figures and leaders in films can positively influence students’ values, aspirations, and behaviors. The findings will be useful for educators, policymakers, and filmmakers who wish to use biographical films as a tool for character education and social development among young people. The study also contributes to the broader understanding of the role of media in shaping youth identity and societal values.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on secondary school students aged 12-18 in Lafia North Local Government Area, Nasarawa State. It will explore how biographical films are used in educational settings and their influence on students' role models, attitudes toward education, and future aspirations. The limitations of this study include the potential variability in the students’ interpretation of films, as well as the challenge of measuring long-term effects of media exposure. Additionally, the study is limited to a single region and may not be fully generalizable to other areas.
