Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Comedy films have long been celebrated for their ability to entertain and alleviate stress, often providing humor in the face of serious issues. In the context of mental health, comedy films have a unique potential to raise awareness by addressing mental health challenges in a light-hearted yet informative manner (Gambo & Ali, 2023). In Mubi North Local Government Area, Adamawa State, where mental health awareness remains relatively low, the role of media in shaping public perception of mental health issues is critical. Comedy films, with their widespread appeal among students, can serve as a medium for addressing mental health awareness, reducing stigma, and encouraging help-seeking behavior (Gambo & Ali, 2023). These films can subtly incorporate themes of mental health struggles, coping mechanisms, and emotional well-being, making the topic more accessible to younger audiences, especially students in secondary and tertiary education. This study aims to explore how comedy films can influence students' awareness of mental health issues, attitudes toward mental health, and their willingness to seek help when needed.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the increasing global awareness of mental health issues, there remains a significant stigma around discussing mental health problems in many parts of Nigeria, including Mubi North. Mental health challenges are often not openly discussed, and students may be unaware of how to recognize mental health issues in themselves or others. Comedy films, which are known for their broad appeal, could be an effective tool in breaking down these barriers by making the topic of mental health more relatable and less stigmatized. However, there is little empirical evidence on the specific impact of comedy films on mental health awareness among students in Mubi North Local Government Area. The problem, therefore, is the lack of understanding regarding how comedy films can contribute to raising awareness and changing attitudes toward mental health among young people in the region. This study seeks to investigate this issue and provide insights into the potential benefits of using comedy films for mental health education.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

To assess the impact of comedy films on students' awareness of mental health issues in Mubi North Local Government Area.

To examine how comedy films influence students' attitudes toward mental health and the stigma surrounding it.

To explore the role of comedy films in encouraging students to seek help for mental health problems.

1.4 Research Questions

What impact do comedy films have on students' attitudes towards mental health and the stigma surrounding mental health problems?

To what extent do comedy films encourage students to seek help for mental health challenges?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

Students who watch comedy films demonstrate more positive attitudes toward mental health and less stigma surrounding mental health problems.

There is a positive correlation between watching comedy films and students' willingness to seek help for mental health issues.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it explores the potential of comedy films as a tool for raising mental health awareness among students. By investigating how humor can be used to address serious issues, the research will provide valuable insights for educators, mental health professionals, and filmmakers. The findings will help shape more effective strategies for mental health education, particularly in contexts where stigma and lack of awareness are prevalent.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on students aged 16-25 in Mubi North Local Government Area, Adamawa State, who regularly watch comedy films. The research will assess how these films influence their awareness and attitudes toward mental health. Limitations include the potential challenge of isolating the effects of comedy films from other factors influencing mental health awareness, such as family background and prior education.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Comedy Films: Films that use humor to entertain and convey messages, which may include light-hearted portrayals of serious topics, such as mental health.

Mental Health Awareness: The understanding and recognition of mental health issues, including their symptoms, causes, and available treatments.
