Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Literacy is a fundamental pillar for the socioeconomic development of any community. In Nigeria, particularly in rural areas, the level of adult literacy remains a concern. Potiskum Local Government Area in Yobe State, like many parts of northern Nigeria, faces challenges in adult education, with many adults lacking basic reading and writing skills. However, recent efforts to improve literacy have explored the potential of various media forms, including film, to enhance education. In recent years, the popularity of Hausa films has surged, and these films are often subtitled in both Hausa and English, providing an accessible means of integrating education and entertainment (Umar & Ibrahim, 2023). Subtitled Hausa films have the potential to improve literacy by offering a visual and auditory experience that can help adults connect spoken language with written text, thus improving reading skills, vocabulary, and comprehension (Haruna & Sani, 2024). These films often feature compelling narratives, cultural values, and relatable themes, which may engage adults in learning while simultaneously addressing literacy challenges. This study aims to assess the effect of watching subtitled Hausa films on literacy rates among adults in Potiskum, focusing on how these films influence reading habits, language acquisition, and overall literacy development.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While Hausa films have gained significant popularity in northern Nigeria, their educational potential, particularly in improving adult literacy, has not been thoroughly examined. In Potiskum, Yobe State, adult literacy remains low, and traditional educational methods have not sufficiently addressed the gap. Subtitled Hausa films could provide an alternative means to engage adults in literacy activities. However, there is little empirical evidence to suggest that these films can have a measurable impact on literacy rates among adults. Furthermore, there is no clear understanding of how effectively the combination of audio-visual content and subtitles might contribute to the development of reading skills, comprehension, and vocabulary. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating the impact of subtitled Hausa films on literacy rates among adults in Potiskum, addressing the need for more inclusive and innovative approaches to adult education.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To examine the impact of subtitled Hausa films on the reading skills of adults in Potiskum Local Government Area.
To assess the role of subtitled Hausa films in improving vocabulary acquisition and language comprehension among adults.
To explore the correlation between regular viewing of subtitled Hausa films and increased literacy rates among adults in Potiskum.
1.4 Research Questions
How do subtitled Hausa films affect the reading skills of adults in Potiskum Local Government Area?
In what ways do subtitled Hausa films contribute to improving vocabulary acquisition and language comprehension among adults?
Is there a significant relationship between the regular viewing of subtitled Hausa films and literacy rates among adults in Potiskum?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
Subtitled Hausa films significantly improve the reading skills of adults in Potiskum Local Government Area.
Adults who watch subtitled Hausa films show higher levels of vocabulary acquisition and language comprehension compared to those who do not.
There is a positive correlation between regular viewing of subtitled Hausa films and increased literacy rates among adults in Potiskum.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores a novel approach to improving adult literacy through the medium of subtitled Hausa films. The findings will be valuable for educators, policymakers, and media producers in understanding how media, especially culturally relevant content, can be used to enhance literacy among adults in rural settings. Additionally, the research could inform the design of educational programs that integrate film as a tool for adult education, particularly in regions with low literacy rates.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on adults aged 18 and above in Potiskum Local Government Area, Yobe State, who regularly watch subtitled Hausa films. The research will assess the impact of these films on reading skills, language comprehension, and vocabulary acquisition. Limitations of the study include the potential for bias in self-reported data and the challenge of controlling for other factors influencing literacy development, such as formal education or socio-economic status.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
Subtitled Hausa Films: Films produced in the Hausa language that include written text (subtitles) in either Hausa or English, displayed at the bottom of the screen, which corresponds to the dialogue or narration.
Adult Literacy: The ability of adults to read, write, and comprehend written text at a functional level.
Vocabulary Acquisition: The process through which individuals learn and retain new words and their meanings, particularly through reading or exposure to language.
