Background of the Study

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology has revolutionized inventory tracking by enabling real-time monitoring of products through tags that transmit information to a central system. Shoprite, a major retail chain in Nigeria, has increasingly adopted RFID technology to enhance inventory management, reduce theft, and ensure that stock levels are accurately maintained. In Kwara State, where Shoprite operates one of its branches, the implementation of RFID technology has the potential to improve operational efficiency, streamline stock replenishment, and enhance customer satisfaction (Adepoju & Wuraola, 2023).

RFID technology offers several benefits in inventory management, including reduced human error, increased stock accuracy, and faster inventory audits. Unlike traditional barcode systems, RFID tags can be scanned from a distance, allowing for quicker and more efficient inventory tracking. This technology is particularly valuable in high-volume retail environments like Shoprite, where large volumes of products need to be tracked across multiple departments. RFID also plays a critical role in minimizing stockouts, overstocking, and shrinkage, which are common challenges in retail inventory management (Oluwole & Olatunji, 2024).

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of RFID technology in inventory tracking at Shoprite in Kwara State, assessing how it improves stock accuracy, reduces operational costs, and enhances supply chain performance.

Statement of the Problem

Although RFID technology has been widely adopted by many retailers to improve inventory tracking, there is limited research on its impact on inventory management in the Nigerian retail context. The problem lies in understanding how effectively RFID technology has been integrated into Shoprite’s operations in Kwara State and how it has contributed to improved inventory accuracy and operational efficiency. Additionally, challenges such as the initial investment cost, employee training, and system integration may affect the successful implementation of RFID in the company’s inventory management processes.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the impact of RFID technology on inventory tracking at Shoprite in Kwara State.

  2. To assess how RFID technology contributes to inventory accuracy and operational efficiency at Shoprite.

  3. To identify the challenges and opportunities associated with implementing RFID technology in Shoprite’s inventory management.

Research Questions

  1. How does RFID technology improve inventory tracking at Shoprite in Kwara State?

  2. What impact does RFID technology have on inventory accuracy and operational efficiency at Shoprite?

  3. What challenges and opportunities does Shoprite face in implementing RFID technology for inventory management?

Research Hypotheses

  1. RFID technology significantly improves inventory tracking at Shoprite in Kwara State.

  2. RFID technology positively impacts inventory accuracy and operational efficiency at Shoprite.

  3. Challenges in implementing RFID technology negatively affect inventory management at Shoprite in Kwara State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on evaluating the impact of RFID technology on inventory tracking at Shoprite’s Kwara State branch. Limitations may include the difficulty in quantifying indirect benefits such as enhanced customer satisfaction and potential challenges in gathering detailed operational data due to the proprietary nature of the company’s inventory system.

Definitions of Terms

  • Radio Frequency Identification (RFID): A technology that uses electromagnetic fields to automatically identify and track tags attached to objects, improving inventory management by providing real-time data on stock levels (Oluwole & Olatunji, 2024).

  • Inventory Tracking: The process of monitoring and managing stock levels, ensuring that the right amount of inventory is available at the right time, in the right location (Adepoju & Wuraola, 2023).

  • Operational Efficiency: The ability of an organization to deliver its services or produce goods with minimum waste, time, and cost, while maintaining high-quality standards (Oluwole & Olatunji, 2024).
