Background of the Study

The Internet of Things (IoT) is revolutionizing supply chain and inventory management across industries. IoT refers to the network of interconnected devices that communicate and exchange data over the internet. In inventory management, IoT technologies such as RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), GPS tracking, and smart sensors have streamlined operations by enabling real-time monitoring of stock levels, tracking the movement of goods, and providing accurate data for decision-making.

PZ Cussons Nigeria, a leading manufacturer and distributor of personal care and home care products, operates across various regions, including Yobe State. The company relies on efficient inventory management systems to ensure that products are readily available to meet consumer demand while minimizing excess stock and associated costs. In Yobe State, where access to real-time inventory data can be hindered by infrastructural challenges, IoT presents a unique opportunity to enhance inventory control. This study aims to investigate the role of IoT in inventory management at PZ Cussons Nigeria, focusing on its implementation and impact on operational efficiency.

Statement of the Problem

PZ Cussons Nigeria, like many companies in the manufacturing and distribution sectors, faces challenges in inventory management, particularly regarding stock visibility and control. In the context of Yobe State, where logistical and technological limitations exist, traditional inventory management methods are often inefficient, leading to stockouts or overstocking. This study seeks to examine how IoT technologies can improve inventory management practices at PZ Cussons Nigeria, thus enhancing overall operational efficiency.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the adoption and implementation of IoT technologies in inventory management at PZ Cussons Nigeria.

  2. To evaluate the impact of IoT on inventory accuracy and operational efficiency at PZ Cussons Nigeria.

  3. To identify the challenges and benefits associated with the use of IoT in inventory management in Yobe State.

Research Questions

  1. How has PZ Cussons Nigeria implemented IoT technologies in its inventory management systems?

  2. What impact has the use of IoT had on inventory accuracy and efficiency at PZ Cussons Nigeria?

  3. What are the challenges and benefits of IoT adoption in inventory management in Yobe State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The adoption of IoT technologies positively affects inventory accuracy at PZ Cussons Nigeria.

  2. The implementation of IoT improves overall operational efficiency in inventory management at PZ Cussons Nigeria.

  3. The use of IoT in inventory management is faced with challenges that hinder its full potential at PZ Cussons Nigeria.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on assessing the role of IoT in inventory management at PZ Cussons Nigeria in Yobe State. Data will be gathered from company reports, interviews with employees, and system performance data. Limitations include potential difficulties in accessing proprietary inventory management data and the limited scope of the study to a single location.

Definitions of Terms

  • Internet of Things (IoT): The network of interconnected devices that collect and exchange data through the internet, allowing for automation and real-time monitoring.

  • Inventory Management: The process of overseeing and controlling the flow of goods in a supply chain, ensuring that inventory levels are optimal to meet customer demand.

  • Operational Efficiency: The ability of a company to manage its operations effectively, minimizing costs and time while maximizing productivity.
