Background of the Study

Informal apprenticeship has long been a cornerstone of skill acquisition in developing countries, particularly in the artisanal and entrepreneurial sectors. In Nigeria, where unemployment rates remain high, informal apprenticeship serves as a vital pathway for young people to acquire skills and gain economic independence. Taraba State, with its thriving carpentry industry, provides an excellent context to examine the effectiveness of informal apprenticeship in fostering entrepreneurial skills.

Research by Onyekachi et al. (2023) emphasizes the importance of apprenticeship in bridging the skills gap in Nigeria’s workforce. Informal apprenticeship, characterized by hands-on training and mentorship, equips individuals with practical skills and entrepreneurial knowledge. However, the sector faces challenges such as inadequate training facilities, lack of standardization, and limited access to modern tools (Abubakar & Ibrahim, 2024). These challenges undermine the potential of informal apprenticeship to meet the demands of a competitive market.

This study explores the role of informal apprenticeship in entrepreneurial skill acquisition, focusing on carpenters in Taraba State. By examining the practices, benefits, and limitations of informal apprenticeship, the study aims to provide insights into how this traditional system can be enhanced to support entrepreneurship.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the critical role of informal apprenticeship in skill acquisition, its effectiveness in fostering entrepreneurial skills remains underexplored. Many apprentices in Taraba State face challenges such as inadequate mentorship, lack of access to modern tools, and limited exposure to business management practices. These limitations hinder their ability to transition from apprenticeship to successful entrepreneurship.

According to Bello and Musa (2023), informal apprenticeship often focuses on technical skills while neglecting entrepreneurial competencies such as financial management, marketing, and customer relations. This gap undermines the potential of apprentices to establish and sustain their businesses in the competitive market.

This study addresses these challenges by investigating the role of informal apprenticeship in entrepreneurial skill acquisition among carpenters in Taraba State. The findings will inform strategies to enhance the apprenticeship system and support entrepreneurial development.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the effectiveness of informal apprenticeship in entrepreneurial skill acquisition among carpenters in Taraba State.

  2. To identify the challenges faced by apprentices in acquiring entrepreneurial skills.

  3. To propose strategies for improving informal apprenticeship to support entrepreneurship.

Research Questions

  1. How effective is informal apprenticeship in fostering entrepreneurial skill acquisition among carpenters in Taraba State?

  2. What challenges do apprentices face in acquiring entrepreneurial skills?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to enhance informal apprenticeship for entrepreneurial development?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Informal apprenticeship significantly contributes to entrepreneurial skill acquisition.

  2. Limited access to modern tools negatively affects the effectiveness of informal apprenticeship.

  3. The inclusion of business management training enhances the outcomes of informal apprenticeship.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on carpenters in Taraba State engaged in informal apprenticeship programs. It examines the effectiveness of these programs in fostering entrepreneurial skills and the challenges faced by apprentices. The study does not cover other artisanal trades or formal training programs. Additionally, the findings may be limited by the subjective nature of self-reported data.
