Background of the Study
The rise of e-commerce has transformed global business operations, creating new opportunities for entrepreneurs to expand their markets and increase efficiency. However, rural entrepreneurs, especially those in developing regions such as Kogi State, face significant challenges in adopting e-commerce platforms. These challenges hinder their ability to compete in an increasingly digital economy, leaving them at a disadvantage compared to their urban counterparts.
E-commerce offers numerous benefits, including reduced transaction costs, broader market reach, and improved customer engagement. Studies by Adetunji and Ibrahim (2023) emphasize the potential of e-commerce to stimulate rural economic growth by connecting local entrepreneurs to larger markets. However, the adoption rate in rural areas remains low due to issues such as poor internet infrastructure, digital illiteracy, and lack of financial resources (Yusuf & Hassan, 2024).
In Kogi State, where entrepreneurship is a significant source of livelihood, limited adoption of e-commerce platforms restricts the growth potential of rural businesses. This study examines the specific challenges faced by rural entrepreneurs in adopting e-commerce and provides insights into overcoming these barriers to promote inclusive economic development.
Despite the rapid growth of e-commerce globally, its adoption among rural entrepreneurs in Kogi State remains limited. This has resulted in missed opportunities for market expansion, revenue growth, and business sustainability. The key challenges include inadequate digital infrastructure, low levels of digital literacy, and cultural resistance to technology adoption.
Research by Bello and Musa (2024) highlights that rural entrepreneurs often lack access to reliable internet services and technical support, making it difficult for them to integrate e-commerce into their business operations. Additionally, limited access to financial resources restricts their ability to invest in digital tools and platforms. These challenges perpetuate economic inequality and hinder the competitiveness of rural entrepreneurs.
