Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Maternal health remains a critical component of public health, as it directly influences the survival and well-being of mothers and children. Despite efforts to reduce maternal mortality rates in Nigeria, regions such as Yola South Local Government, Adamawa State, continue to face challenges, including limited access to quality healthcare, low health literacy, and socio-cultural barriers. Magazines, as a form of print media, play an essential role in promoting maternal health by publishing features that educate, inform, and influence public attitudes and behaviors. These features often include expert advice, personal stories, and awareness campaigns on prenatal care, family planning, and safe delivery practices (Hassan & Bello, 2023). By reaching diverse audiences, magazines contribute to reducing misconceptions and encouraging the adoption of positive health behaviors. This study examines the effectiveness of magazine features in promoting maternal health in Yola South, focusing on their content, reach, and impact on readers' knowledge and practices.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the availability of magazines featuring maternal health topics, their impact on improving maternal health outcomes in Yola South remains uncertain. Issues such as limited distribution, affordability, and cultural relevance may hinder their effectiveness (Abdullahi & Sani, 2024). Additionally, the extent to which these features influence awareness and behavior change among women and families in the region is not well understood. This study seeks to explore the effectiveness of magazine features in promoting maternal health, identifying challenges and recommending strategies for improvement.
