Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Substance abuse is a growing public health challenge in Nigeria, with significant social and economic consequences. In Damaturu Local Government, Yobe State, the prevalence of drug misuse, especially among youths, has raised concerns about its impact on crime rates, unemployment, and community well-being. Newspapers, as powerful communication tools, play a vital role in raising awareness, educating the public, and advocating for solutions to address substance abuse. Through investigative reporting, opinion pieces, and features, newspapers provide critical insights into the causes and consequences of substance misuse while promoting community-based interventions (Abubakar & Goni, 2023). Additionally, newspapers serve as a platform for engaging stakeholders, including policymakers, law enforcement, and healthcare providers, to develop strategies for prevention and rehabilitation. This study examines the contributions of newspapers in the fight against substance abuse in Damaturu, focusing on public perception and the effectiveness of media campaigns.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the efforts of newspapers to combat substance abuse through awareness campaigns and investigative reporting, the effectiveness of these contributions is often questioned. In Damaturu Local Government, challenges such as limited readership, poor access to newspapers, and insufficient follow-up on advocacy efforts undermine the media’s role in addressing this issue (Ahmed & Ibrahim, 2024). Furthermore, the lack of targeted content addressing vulnerable groups, such as youths, may reduce the impact of media campaigns. This study investigates the extent to which newspapers have contributed to the fight against substance abuse and explores the challenges they face in achieving this goal.
