Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Environmental degradation, characterized by deforestation, soil erosion, desertification, and pollution, remains a significant challenge globally, with local manifestations in various Nigerian communities, including Gombe Local Government in Gombe State. Print media serves as a powerful tool for raising awareness and advocating for environmental preservation by highlighting the causes, consequences, and solutions to degradation. In Gombe, where environmental challenges such as desert encroachment and poor waste management are prevalent, newspapers and magazines play a critical role in disseminating information and educating the public (Bello & Ibrahim, 2023). These publications often feature investigative reports, opinion pieces, and advocacy campaigns designed to influence public behavior and pressure policymakers into action. However, the effectiveness of print media in addressing environmental issues is often questioned due to limited readership and competing narratives from digital platforms. This study examines the role of print media in covering environmental degradation issues in Gombe, assessing its impact on public awareness, behavioral change, and policy formulation.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Environmental degradation in Gombe Local Government poses serious threats to agricultural productivity, public health, and overall sustainability. While print media coverage of these issues has the potential to drive awareness and action, its effectiveness remains underexplored. Challenges such as low literacy rates, inadequate funding for investigative journalism, and the growing influence of digital media have raised concerns about the reach and impact of print media campaigns (Adamu & Yusuf, 2024). Furthermore, the lack of a clear strategy for linking media coverage to actionable policy outcomes exacerbates the problem. This study seeks to address these gaps by evaluating the effectiveness of print media coverage in tackling environmental degradation in Gombe, focusing on its strengths, limitations, and opportunities for improvement.
