Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

The global influence of foreign films, especially Hollywood productions, has led to significant cultural shifts in many parts of the world, including Nigeria. In regions like Zing Local Government Area of Taraba State, where traditional values are deeply held, the increasing consumption of foreign films may be influencing the adoption of Western cultural norms and practices. The portrayal of Western lifestyles, fashion, relationships, and values in foreign films can impact the younger generation’s attitudes and behaviors (Aminu & Yakubu, 2023).

This study seeks to investigate the extent to which foreign films are shaping the adoption of Western culture in Zing Local Government Area, focusing on the social and cultural changes among the youth.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the popularity of foreign films in Nigeria, their influence on local cultures and values, particularly in rural areas like Zing, remains an under-researched area. This study will examine how the consumption of foreign films is affecting the cultural identity of Zing’s youth and whether it leads to the adoption of Western values at the expense of traditional practices (Ibrahim & Usman, 2023).

  2. To evaluate the impact of foreign films on the adoption of Western cultural norms.
  3. To explore the influence of foreign films on youth attitudes towards traditional values in Zing Local Government Area.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. To what extent are foreign films popular in Zing Local Government Area?
  2. How do foreign films influence the adoption of Western cultural values in Zing?
  3. What is the impact of foreign films on youth perceptions of traditional values in Zing Local Government Area?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Foreign films significantly influence the adoption of Western cultural norms in Zing Local Government Area.
  2. Exposure to foreign films leads to a shift in youth attitudes towards traditional values in Zing.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will provide insight into the cultural impact of foreign films on rural Nigerian communities. The findings will be valuable for policymakers, educators, and cultural institutions aiming to preserve local traditions while navigating the effects of globalization.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the influence of foreign films in Zing Local Government Area, Taraba State. One limitation is that the results may not apply to other regions with different levels of exposure to foreign films.
