Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Kannywood, the Hausa-language film industry, has gained significant popularity across Nigeria, particularly in the northern regions. Films produced in Kannywood often depict various aspects of Hausa culture, including traditional marriage ceremonies, which are central to the social fabric of northern Nigerian communities. However, the portrayal of these ceremonies in films may not always align with the traditional practices, potentially altering public perceptions and behaviors (Mohammed & Suleiman, 2023).

In Kura Local Government Area of Kano State, traditional marriage ceremonies are deeply rooted in cultural practices. This study seeks to explore the impact of Kannywood films on the public’s perception of these ceremonies, particularly focusing on whether they influence how these traditions are viewed by younger generations.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While Kannywood films are popular and influential, their impact on cultural practices, specifically traditional marriage ceremonies, has not been sufficiently explored. This study aims to examine whether these films contribute to altering the way people perceive and practice traditional marriage ceremonies in Kura Local Government Area (Bello & Ismail, 2023).

  2. To evaluate the impact of Kannywood films on the perception of traditional marriage in Kura Local Government Area.
  3. To determine whether Kannywood films influence the practice and modification of traditional marriage customs in the community.

  1. How do Kannywood films portray traditional marriage ceremonies?
  2. What impact do Kannywood films have on the perception of traditional marriage ceremonies in Kura?
  3. How have Kannywood films influenced the practice of traditional marriage ceremonies in Kura Local Government Area?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Kannywood films have significantly impacted the perception of traditional marriage ceremonies in Kura Local Government Area.
  2. Kannywood films have contributed to changes in the way traditional marriage ceremonies are practiced in Kura Local Government Area.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will contribute to the understanding of how media, particularly film, can influence cultural practices. The findings will be useful to filmmakers, cultural promoters, and community leaders who seek to balance tradition with modern media portrayals.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on the influence of Kannywood films on the perception and practice of traditional marriage ceremonies in Kura Local Government Area. A limitation of the study is the potential bias in respondents' views, shaped by their level of exposure to Kannywood films.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
