Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

War films, with their intense portrayal of military life, conflict, and heroism, have the power to shape public perceptions of the military and its role in national security. In Borno State, particularly in Chibok, where the community has been affected by the insurgency, the representation of the military in war films may influence local attitudes toward security forces (Usman & Aliyu, 2023). These films, whether depicting historical conflicts or modern-day military engagements, play a significant role in influencing public understanding and sentiments about the military’s actions and effectiveness (Hassan & Mohammed, 2024).

In Nigeria, the military's role in combatting insurgencies and maintaining peace has been central to national security, but public trust can be fragile, especially in regions with ongoing conflicts like Borno (Akinwale, 2023). War films often portray the military in heroic or controversial lights, affecting how civilians perceive their role in society. This study examines how war films influence public opinion about the military in Chibok, an area deeply impacted by conflict (Idris & Shuaibu, 2023).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The portrayal of the military in war films can either bolster or undermine public trust in military institutions, especially in conflict-ridden areas like Chibok. Despite the growing influence of film in shaping public opinion, there is little research on how these films impact the perception of the military in this specific community. This study investigates how war films affect public attitudes toward the military in Chibok and explores the broader implications for national security awareness (Ibrahim, 2024).

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze how the military is depicted in war films shown in Chibok.
  2. To assess the influence of these depictions on public perceptions of the military.
  3. To explore how war films can improve or damage the military’s relationship with local communities.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How is the military portrayed in war films viewed in Chibok?
  2. What is the public’s perception of the military after watching war films?
  3. How can war films improve or damage public trust in the military?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. War films influence public perceptions of the military in Chibok.
  2. Positive portrayals of the military in war films improve public trust in military institutions.
  3. Negative portrayals of the military in war films reduce support for the armed forces.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will provide valuable insights into the influence of war films on public opinion about the military, offering recommendations for filmmakers, military officers, and policymakers on using film to enhance trust and cooperation.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the impact of war films on public perceptions of the military in Chibok Local Government Area, Borno State.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • War Films: Movies that depict military conflict and the experiences of soldiers during wartime.
  • Public Perception: The collective attitudes, beliefs, and opinions held by the public regarding a particular topic.
  • Chibok: A local government area in Borno State, Nigeria, affected by the insurgency.
