1.1 Background of the Study
War films, with their intense portrayal of military life, conflict, and heroism, have the power to shape public perceptions of the military and its role in national security. In Borno State, particularly in Chibok, where the community has been affected by the insurgency, the representation of the military in war films may influence local attitudes toward security forces (Usman & Aliyu, 2023). These films, whether depicting historical conflicts or modern-day military engagements, play a significant role in influencing public understanding and sentiments about the military’s actions and effectiveness (Hassan & Mohammed, 2024).
In Nigeria, the military's role in combatting insurgencies and maintaining peace has been central to national security, but public trust can be fragile, especially in regions with ongoing conflicts like Borno (Akinwale, 2023). War films often portray the military in heroic or controversial lights, affecting how civilians perceive their role in society. This study examines how war films influence public opinion about the military in Chibok, an area deeply impacted by conflict (Idris & Shuaibu, 2023).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The portrayal of the military in war films can either bolster or undermine public trust in military institutions, especially in conflict-ridden areas like Chibok. Despite the growing influence of film in shaping public opinion, there is little research on how these films impact the perception of the military in this specific community. This study investigates how war films affect public attitudes toward the military in Chibok and explores the broader implications for national security awareness (Ibrahim, 2024).
