Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Maternal mortality remains a critical public health issue in Nigeria, with thousands of women dying each year from complications related to pregnancy and childbirth. In Bauchi State, including Katagum Local Government Area, maternal health challenges are exacerbated by factors such as inadequate healthcare facilities, poverty, and cultural barriers to seeking medical help (Bawa & Mohammed, 2023). As a cultural and entertainment hub, Hausa films have the power to influence public attitudes toward health practices, particularly in rural areas where health literacy may be low (Aminu & Ibrahim, 2023).

Hausa films, a major part of the Nigerian film industry known as Kannywood, have a long history of reflecting and shaping societal attitudes. They can serve as a critical medium for addressing health issues, as they not only entertain but also inform and educate audiences on important issues, such as maternal health (Alhassan & Yusuf, 2024). The representation of maternal mortality in these films can influence attitudes toward seeking medical assistance during pregnancy, highlighting the importance of antenatal care and safe delivery practices (Abdullahi & Bello, 2023).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the potential of Hausa films to address health issues, maternal mortality remains a persistent problem in Katagum. The role of Kannywood films in shaping public awareness and behavior regarding maternal health is insufficiently explored. This study seeks to understand how Hausa films address maternal mortality and whether their content influences community perceptions and behaviors related to maternal health (Sadiq, 2023).

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To explore how maternal mortality is depicted in Hausa films.
  2. To assess the impact of these films on public attitudes and practices regarding maternal health in Katagum.
  3. To identify the potential role of Hausa films in influencing policy and social change regarding maternal mortality.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How is maternal mortality portrayed in Hausa films popular in Katagum?
  2. What impact do these films have on local attitudes towards maternal health?
  3. How can Hausa films be used more effectively to address maternal mortality in Katagum?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Hausa films significantly influence public attitudes toward maternal health practices in Katagum.
  2. Positive portrayals of maternal health in films encourage safer practices among women.
  3. The widespread consumption of films that address maternal mortality improves health outcomes in the community.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will shed light on the role of Hausa films in addressing maternal mortality, offering recommendations for filmmakers, health organizations, and policymakers to use media more effectively to tackle health challenges.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on how Hausa films are used to address maternal mortality in Katagum Local Government Area, Bauchi State.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Maternal Mortality: The death of women during pregnancy, childbirth, or within the postpartum period.
  • Hausa Films: Movies produced within the Kannywood film industry, primarily in the Hausa language, that often address social issues.
  • Katagum: A local government area in Bauchi State, Nigeria.
