Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Nollywood, as one of the largest film industries globally, has a significant influence on Nigerian society. Its films often portray family dynamics, addressing themes such as love, conflict resolution, and generational gaps. These narratives shape audience perceptions and behaviors regarding family roles and responsibilities (Adamu & Ibrahim, 2023). In Ganjuwa Local Government Area, Bauchi State, where traditional family structures prevail, Nollywood movies provide a platform for reflecting on evolving family values. This interaction between media and culture necessitates an exploration of how films influence family relationships and societal norms (Garba, 2024).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While Nollywood movies have gained widespread popularity, concerns arise about their portrayal of family dynamics, which may sometimes conflict with cultural and religious values. In Ganjuwa, there is limited research on how these films impact family relationships, including communication patterns, conflict resolution, and role expectations. Understanding this influence is critical to addressing any potential negative effects while harnessing the positive aspects of Nollywood storytelling (Yusuf & Abubakar, 2023).

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine how Nollywood films portray family relationships.
  2. To assess the influence of these portrayals on family dynamics in Ganjuwa.
  3. To explore the compatibility of film narratives with cultural values in Ganjuwa.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How are family relationships depicted in Nollywood films?
  2. What impact do these depictions have on family relationships in Ganjuwa?
  3. Do Nollywood narratives align with or challenge traditional family values in Ganjuwa?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Nollywood films significantly influence family relationships in Ganjuwa.
  2. Film portrayals of family dynamics may conflict with cultural norms.
  3. Positive narratives in films promote improved family communication and cohesion.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study offers insights into the social impact of Nollywood movies on family relationships, providing valuable recommendations for filmmakers, educators, and policymakers to promote culturally sensitive narratives.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is confined to the impact of Nollywood movies on family relationships in Ganjuwa Local Government Area, Bauchi State.
