1.1 Background of the Study
Romance films are a popular genre worldwide, influencing the perceptions and behaviors of audiences, particularly teenagers. These films often portray idealized relationships, shaping teenage views on love, intimacy, and conflict resolution. In Nigeria, the accessibility of Nollywood and foreign romance films has amplified their impact on teenage relationships (Adamu & Ibrahim, 2023). In Gaya Local Government Area, Kano State, the prevalence of these films among teenagers presents a unique lens to explore their influence on relationship expectations and communication patterns, as well as their alignment with cultural norms.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Teenagers are in a developmental phase where media consumption significantly shapes their perceptions and behaviors. While romance films can provide positive lessons about relationships, they may also perpetuate unrealistic expectations and misconceptions. In Gaya, where cultural and religious values strongly influence social norms, there is a need to investigate how these films affect teenage relationships and whether they conflict with or reinforce local traditions (Abubakar & Musa, 2024).
