Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Traditional leadership plays a significant role in the cultural and social governance of many Nigerian communities. Hausa films, deeply rooted in the traditions of Northern Nigeria, often portray traditional leaders as custodians of culture and mediators of societal issues. These representations influence public perceptions of leadership roles and values (Aliyu & Ahmed, 2023). In Faskari Local Government Area, Katsina State, where traditional systems still hold sway, Hausa films serve as a medium to reflect and sometimes critique leadership structures. This study investigates how traditional leadership is represented in Hausa films and its impact on viewers’ perceptions of governance and culture.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While traditional leadership is a recurrent theme in Hausa films, its portrayal often oscillates between idealization and criticism. The lack of comprehensive studies on how these depictions influence societal attitudes toward leadership in Faskari creates a gap in understanding the intersection of culture, media, and governance (Bello & Musa, 2024). This research aims to explore the nuances of traditional leadership representation in Hausa films and its implications.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze the portrayal of traditional leadership in Hausa films.
  2. To assess the impact of these portrayals on community perceptions of leadership in Faskari.
  3. To evaluate the cultural significance of traditional leadership as depicted in Hausa films.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How is traditional leadership portrayed in Hausa films?
  2. What impact do these portrayals have on community perceptions in Faskari?
  3. What cultural values are emphasized in the depiction of traditional leadership in Hausa films?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Hausa films prominently portray traditional leadership as both cultural and governance anchors.
  2. These portrayals significantly influence community perceptions of leadership roles in Faskari.
  3. Hausa films emphasize cultural values in their depiction of traditional leadership.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study sheds light on the interplay between media and cultural governance, providing insights for filmmakers, traditional leaders, and policymakers to better understand the societal impact of Hausa films.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the representation of traditional leadership in Hausa films as perceived in Faskari Local Government Area, Katsina State.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Traditional Leadership: Leadership roles rooted in cultural and historical governance systems.
  • Hausa Films: Films produced in Hausa language, primarily reflecting Northern Nigerian culture.
