Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

The media plays a pivotal role in shaping societal perceptions and challenging traditional norms, and films are particularly influential due to their storytelling power. Hausa films, a subset of Nollywood that reflects the culture and traditions of Northern Nigeria, are gaining recognition for their potential to address pressing societal issues, including gender inequality (Bello & Yakubu, 2023). Gender inequality remains a significant challenge in many parts of Nigeria, particularly in regions where traditional and cultural norms limit women's opportunities and roles (Usman & Aliyu, 2024). Hausa films, with their wide reach and culturally resonant narratives, are increasingly used to promote gender equality by challenging stereotypes, advocating for women’s empowerment, and highlighting the contributions of women in society. This study examines the role of Hausa films in promoting gender equality in Gombe Central Local Government Area, focusing on their content, audience reception, and societal impact.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Gender inequality persists in many communities across Northern Nigeria, including Gombe Central Local Government Area, where women face barriers to education, employment, and political participation. Although films have the potential to inspire change, their use in promoting gender equality remains underutilized and under-researched (Abdullahi & Musa, 2023). The representation of women in Hausa films has historically been influenced by cultural and religious considerations, often reinforcing rather than challenging traditional roles. This study seeks to investigate whether Hausa films are effectively promoting gender equality and how audiences in Gombe Central perceive these efforts.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze the representation of gender roles in Hausa films.
  2. To assess the impact of Hausa films on perceptions of gender equality in Gombe Central Local Government Area.
  3. To identify the challenges and opportunities of using Hausa films to promote gender equality.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How are gender roles represented in Hausa films?
  2. What impact do Hausa films have on perceptions of gender equality in Gombe Central Local Government Area?
  3. What challenges and opportunities exist in using Hausa films to promote gender equality?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Hausa films significantly challenge traditional gender roles and stereotypes.
  2. Exposure to Hausa films advocating gender equality positively influences audience perceptions in Gombe Central Local Government Area.
  3. Cultural and societal barriers affect the effectiveness of Hausa films in promoting gender equality.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study sheds light on the transformative potential of Hausa films as tools for advocating gender equality in Northern Nigeria. By exploring their impact on audience perceptions and societal norms, the research contributes to the broader discourse on media and social change. The findings are valuable to filmmakers, gender advocates, and policymakers working to achieve gender equity in culturally sensitive contexts.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is limited to the role of Hausa films in promoting gender equality in Gombe Central Local Government Area, Gombe State. It focuses on gender-related narratives in Hausa films and their reception within the community.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
