1.1 Background of the Study
Kannywood, the Hausa-language film industry based in northern Nigeria, has become an influential medium for addressing social issues and promoting cultural values. In recent years, the industry has explored themes such as education, health, and gender equality, providing a platform to discuss critical challenges faced by rural communities (Abubakar & Ahmed, 2023). Healthcare is a recurring theme in Kannywood films, where narratives often highlight the struggles of accessing quality medical services, especially in remote areas. In Birnin Kudu Local Government Area, where rural healthcare challenges such as inadequate facilities, lack of personnel, and traditional beliefs persist, Kannywood films serve as both a reflection of these issues and a tool for advocacy (Musa & Abdullahi, 2024). This study investigates the role of Kannywood films in highlighting rural healthcare challenges, examining their effectiveness in raising awareness and promoting behavioral change.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts to improve healthcare delivery in rural Nigeria, regions like Birnin Kudu continue to face significant challenges. Limited awareness, cultural misconceptions, and infrastructural deficits exacerbate the situation, leading to poor health outcomes. While Kannywood films have addressed these issues in their narratives, their actual impact on public awareness and attitudes toward healthcare remains unclear (Garba & Yusuf, 2023). The lack of systematic research on the effectiveness of Kannywood films in highlighting healthcare challenges and influencing behavior underscores the need for this study.
