Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Cinema has long been recognized as a powerful medium for cultural expression and social change, particularly in advocating for marginalized groups such as women. In northern Nigeria, Hausa films, produced within the Kannywood film industry, have played a significant role in addressing societal issues, including gender inequality and women's rights. These films often highlight challenges such as forced marriages, domestic violence, and limited access to education, while advocating for empowerment and equality (Usman & Musa, 2023). In Hadejia Local Government Area, where traditional norms heavily influence gender dynamics, Hausa films serve as a critical platform for promoting awareness and challenging stereotypes. Recent studies reveal that culturally contextual storytelling in films fosters empathy, reshapes perceptions, and mobilizes action toward gender equity (Bello & Aisha, 2024). This study explores the effectiveness of Hausa films in advocating for women’s rights in Hadejia, assessing their impact on attitudes and behaviors within the community.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts to promote women’s rights through media, gender inequality remains a persistent issue in regions like Hadejia Local Government Area. Cultural norms, religious interpretations, and systemic barriers continue to limit women’s access to education, economic opportunities, and decision-making roles (Abdullahi & Yusuf, 2023). While Hausa films have emerged as a tool for advocacy, there is limited empirical evidence on their impact in challenging these norms and empowering women in rural communities. The extent to which these films resonate with local audiences and influence behavioral change remains underexplored (Garba & Mohammed, 2024). This study addresses this gap by evaluating the role of Hausa films in advocating for women’s rights in Hadejia, providing insights into their effectiveness and limitations.
1.3 Objectives of the Study

- To evaluate the impact of Hausa films on attitudes toward women’s rights in Hadejia Local Government Area.

1.6 Significance of the Study

By focusing on Hausa films, the research highlights how culturally resonant storytelling can challenge stereotypes, inspire change, and foster gender equity. The findings will benefit filmmakers, gender advocates, policymakers, and community leaders seeking to leverage film as a tool for empowerment and social transformation.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to Hadejia Local Government Area, Jigawa State, and focuses exclusively on the effectiveness of Hausa films in advocating for women’s rights. It does not extend to other media or geographical contexts.

- Hausa Films: Films produced in the Kannywood industry, primarily addressing cultural and societal issues in northern Nigeria.
