1.1 Background of the Study
Mental health remains one of the most stigmatized aspects of healthcare in Nigeria, with traditional beliefs and societal misconceptions contributing to discrimination and neglect. Comedy, a universally appreciated art form, has emerged as a powerful tool for addressing social issues, including mental health stigma. Through humor, comedians and content creators challenge entrenched stereotypes, foster open dialogue, and normalize conversations around mental well-being (Okafor & Ibrahim, 2023). In rural areas like Misau Local Government Area, where cultural norms often discourage discussions about mental health, comedy offers a relatable and non-threatening avenue for awareness. Recent studies highlight how comedic storytelling, infused with culturally resonant themes, can reshape perceptions, reduce stigma, and promote help-seeking behaviors (Adamu & Yusuf, 2024). By weaving humor into narratives that depict the realities of mental illness, comedy humanizes the experience and fosters empathy, creating a supportive environment for change. This study examines how comedy has been utilized to address mental health stigma in Misau, assessing its effectiveness in breaking barriers and influencing attitudes.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite growing awareness of mental health issues, stigma remains a significant barrier to accessing care, particularly in rural regions like Misau Local Government Area. Cultural misconceptions, fear of judgment, and inadequate information perpetuate silence and discrimination against individuals with mental health conditions (Eze & Oladipo, 2023). While comedy has been recognized for its potential to address societal issues, its specific role in tackling mental health stigma in Misau is underexplored. There is limited empirical evidence on how comedic content influences perceptions, reduces prejudice, and encourages conversations about mental health in this context. Additionally, the effectiveness of comedy in bridging gaps between traditional beliefs and modern mental health practices remains unclear (Ibrahim & Bello, 2024). This study seeks to fill these gaps by investigating how comedy has been used to challenge stigma and promote mental health awareness in Misau.
