Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Indigenous language newspapers have emerged as vital tools in political mobilization, particularly in regions where the use of native languages fosters accessibility and resonance among local populations. In Katsina Local Government, Katsina State, newspapers published in indigenous languages are instrumental in bridging the communication gap between political leaders and the grassroots populace. By disseminating political messages, election information, and civic education, these newspapers ensure that communities are informed and engaged in political processes. Additionally, they serve as platforms for voicing local concerns, thereby empowering citizens to participate actively in governance. This study examines how indigenous language newspapers contribute to political mobilization in Katsina, emphasizing their role in shaping public discourse and enhancing democratic participation.
