Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Gender equality is a cornerstone of social progress, encompassing equal opportunities and rights for all genders. In Jalingo Local Government, Taraba State, print media is a vital tool for raising awareness about gender equality. Through investigative reports, opinion columns, and advocacy campaigns, newspapers and magazines highlight issues such as discrimination, empowerment, and policy reforms. By shaping public discourse, print media plays a crucial role in challenging stereotypes and promoting equitable practices. This study examines the extent to which print media influences awareness and attitudes toward gender equality in Jalingo.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite efforts to promote gender equality, traditional norms and societal biases continue to hinder progress in Jalingo. While print media has the potential to advocate for change, its effectiveness in raising awareness and influencing attitudes remains under-researched. This study seeks to evaluate the role of print media in advancing gender equality awareness and identify factors that affect its impact.

1.5 Research Hypotheses

1. Print media significantly raises awareness about gender equality in Jalingo.

3. Cultural biases and inadequate representation limit the effectiveness of print media advocacy.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study provides a framework for understanding how print media contributes to gender equality advocacy. It offers recommendations for media practitioners and policymakers to enhance the effectiveness of print media campaigns.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is confined to the influence of print media on gender equality awareness in Jalingo Local Government, Taraba State. Other forms of media and regions are not included.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Gender Equality: The state of equal rights and opportunities for all genders.

• Print Media: Printed publications, such as newspapers and magazines, used for information dissemination.

• Awareness: The knowledge and understanding of an issue or concept.
